Do We?   Brothers, there must be no misunderstanding of what God’s wrath is. It should never be confused with man’s wrath, which is sinful. Let’ s read the Holy Scripture: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, evenHim as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Romans 1:1 God’s wrath is not a sudden fit of temper; neither is it a desire for revenge. These things are sin, and we cannot attribute sin to God. Because God is HOLY. God’s wrath is a fixed attitude of opposition toward all unrighteousness. This attitude never changes. It will culminate in righteous judgment on all who finally and completely reject God’s offer of love. God abhors sin, but He loves the sinner. This was clearly manifested when He made a way for the sinner to escape the consequences of sin and provided such a wonderful salvation in Christ. God’s attitude toward the sinner is seen in such passages as John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. His attitude toward sin, however, is entirely different. Sin is of the Devil, and God in His wrath is against it. He will never tolerate it, regardless of the circumstances. If a sinner continues in sin, refusing to accept God’s gift of eternal life, then God’s unchanging attitude of wrath toward sin will be revealed against the sinner. This is the truth stated in John 3:36: He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” In other words, when the sinner clings to his sin and refuses God’s offer of mercy through FAITH in His Son- Jesus- then sin and the sinner are one so far as the wrath of God is concerned. “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). So, what God does say to every one of us? We, in Western culture, only have to walk to the sink to get clean drinking water straight out of the faucet. Our showers will run as long as we leave them on, and our bathtubs are filled to the brim. Many people in my neighborhood back home have swimming pools, perfect for relaxing and cooling off on a hot day. The average American uses approximately 100 gallons of water per day without even thinking about it. But did you know that… -The daily water requirement for proper sanitation, bathing, and cooking needs, as well as drinking and assuring survival, is about 13.2 gallons per person. -But in the slums of Chile, a family of four must survive on an average of 10 gallons per day to meet the needs of the whole family. -In your 5-minute morning shower alone, you used more water than the typical person living in a developing country will use in a whole day. –1 billion people, about 1 in 8 of the world’s population, lack access to clean water. -3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease. That is one death every three seconds! -The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any way claims through guns. -At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related disease. -Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic worms in their bodies at any time. –1.4 million children die as a result of diarrhea each year. -443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related illness. -People living in developing countries often have to walk dozens of miles to get water – water that is often dirty and infected with deadly disease. Often their drinking water comes from muddy puddles. With regard to sanitation… –2.5 billion people don’t have access to a toilet. -Only 62% of the world’s population has access to improved sanitation – defined only as a sanitation facility that ensures hygienic separation of human excreta from human contact. -Lack of sanitation is the world’s biggest cause of infection. -Lack of sanitation and dirty water leads to: diarrhea, nausea, inflammation of the intestines, cholera, typhoid, Hepatitis A, dysentery, parasites, amoebas, worms, salmonella, scabies, malaria, and many more. But what can we do? Does the investment of compassionate Americans in sanitation and water improvements in the third world actually produce results? Check out these statistics… -On average, every U.S. dollar invested in water and sanitation provides an economic return of eight U.S. dollars. -The planned investment of $11.3 billion U.S. dollars to meet the drinking water and sanitation target of the Millennium Development Goals, is expected to yield a total payback of $84 billion U.S. dollars. -With improved sanitation due to investment there will be 272 million additional school attendance days per year, 1.5 billion more healthy days for children under age 5, and a health-care savings of $3.6 billion U.S. dollars per year for health agencies and $340 million U.S. dollars per year for individuals. We must arise and combat this deadly issue claiming the lives of God’s children every three seconds. We, the church, have the resources, faith, and ability to save lives and bring the love of God to a hurting world. Pray that governments would be convicted of their corruption, and begin to budget money appropriately to be able to fund clean-water projects and protect the health of their people, as they should. Pray for the minds and hearts of engineers to invent new and cost-effective ways to capture, purify, and transport water to the people that need it most. Pray a bold prayer for a miraculous cleansing of the health of children currently suffering from parasites and disease. Pray for workers to rise up and devote their time, talents, and resources to the compassionate cause of fighting for the rights to clean water for all people everywhere. Pray for the people living in developing countries, that though their bodies may die too soon, their souls would be saved through having an intimate and personal relationship with their Savior Jesus Christ. Pray that missionaries would see great success in bringing people to know Christ. Pray for an outpouring of financial blessing on organizations currently working to bring sanitation and clean water to those with no access to it. Thank the Lord for the blessings you have in your life! Praise Him for the resources that you have. Be grateful for the comforts that you have. And don’t take the resources you have for granted. Clean water is a finite resource! Reduce your water water use today by doing simple things like: turning the faucet off when you brush your teeth, take shorter showers, only do laundry and dishes when you have a full load, water your lawn during the evening when it is cool, etc. Spread the word and get involved. Water.org does a great job at both informing the general public in the affluent areas of the world and pooling resources to bring change to the areas that need it most. By Erica In light of the new immigration laws signed into effect in Arizona, I believe now is the perfect time to take a look at our own opinions of these strangers in our own land. For those of you who don’t know, on April 23rd Arizona passed a bill allowing police to question and arrest people without warrant if there is “reasonable suspicion” about their immigration status, among other items. Whether you see this bill as a step in the right direction toward preventing illegal immigration or view it as legalized racial profiling, you should be aware that this is not the only case of its kind making headlines across the country. Several states, especially throughout the South and Midwest are in the process of voting on bills that have to do with prohibiting people from taking their driver’s license tests in a language other than English. As of now, Georgia has passed this bill in the Senate, and the governor has publicly said he would sign it into law. Currently Georgia offers the test in 12 languages. Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri are all also in the process of getting similar bills passed. All four states cite road safety as their number one concern in requiring that drivers be English-literate. However, in Georgia, the new law would still allow illiterate English speakers to have the driver’s test given to them orally – thus nullifying the “literacy and safety” argument. Whether you agree or disagree with these new laws, I think it is important to assess the condition of this country. Where did we get these opinions of foreigners? Are we not all foreigners on this earth? Certainly the media has helped to form our stereotypes by portraying floods of illegal immigrants taking our jobs and neglecting taxes and clogging up our health care system, but we must decide for ourselves whether we are merely regurgitating the opinions of others that have been so forcefully spoon-fed to us our whole lives or if we truly believe that the reason for the decline of America is immigration. What do our own personal experiences with other cultures say? For me, if I am honest, they tell me that Mexicans are some of the hardest-working people around, Asians are some of the best educated, and those from the Middle East know how to throw a party. As for my opinion on the matter politically, I am far more interested in what the church is doing about it, as opposed to my local House Representative. We, as believers, are measured with a different ruler than those who have yet to find Jesus. What are we, the church, doing to educate our foreign neighbors? How are we serving “the least” in our own community? Though I don’t believe immigrants should abandon their own culture, I know for a fact that learning English would greatly improve their quality of life. It will help to ease their transition into American life and open doors to higher education and to jobs. Personally, I see it as a form of social justice to provide people with a means to learn English, as it can affect their life in so many positive ways. Unfortunately, for many adult learners, it is extremely difficult to learn English. Many refugees have never even held a pencil before. Many are too busy or too tired or too poor to be able to find the time and resources to learn English. Many of them don’t even have access to English language programs. It is my fervent prayer that this country does not regress into a place that turns its back on the foreigners among us. Discrimination is so contrary to the ways of Jesus. As Christians, we should be at the forefront of the movement to ensure that this land continues to be a place of cultural diversity, where we welcome the foreigner and treat them with kindness. What if the church held community English classes? What if the church became a place to empower people to succeed and to break the chains of poverty and oppression that often characterize the life of a non-English speaker? What if we removed the blinders of judgement and hatred and the veil of stereotypes? I believe we would see a person. We would see a beloved son or daughter of God. We, the church, have the power and resources to extend grace and hospitality. Wherever you stand politically, you should know where you stand morally. This is not a Democrat vs. Republican conversation. This isn’t about taxes or laws or elections. This is about the church. This is about the followers of Christ truly following Christ. Jesus didn’t preach a message of hostility to the stranger. He taught of love for all men. And though I often don’t know where I stand when it comes to politics, I know I stand on the side of love.
